(Portable Electrical Appliance Testing) - PAT

WHAT IS A PAT TEST?

A (PAT) Portable Electrical Appliance Test is an inspection & test of an electrical appliance (i.e. microwave, fridge, iron, vacuum cleaner...) to assess it is in a safe condition to use.

A recent independent survey established around 58% of households have never had any form of electrical inspection and were unaware such an inspection existed

WHAT WILL IT TELL ME?

PAT testing will highlight any potential faults and shock risks in an appliance and it's wiring before it becomes a real risk. Heavy usage appliances such

as kettles, irons and vacuum

cleaners frequently fail testing

due to cut or frayed cables,

however these are easily

remedied and can often be

fixed at the same time as testing is carried out.

Other potential risks come from cracked/broken or worn switches or sockets, these pose a real hazard particularly where 'little fingers' are concerned.

HOW OFTEN DO MY APPLIANCES NEED CHECKED?

PAT testing is typically carried out every 12 months, however for LET / Rented properties this is now compulsory and may need to be carried out more frequently depending on the frequency of turnover of tenants.

HOW LONG DOES TESTING TAKE?

Typically testing takes between 30-60 minutes however it really depends on the number of items being tested. As a pro active company and unlike most other companies, we also check and test electrical sockets, light fittings and switches all at no extra cost.

WHY DO I NEED TO PAT TEST APPLIANCES?

  • To adhere to the Health & Safety Legislation

  • To comply with the Electricity At Work Regulations 1989.

  • To minimise fire risks and electric shock hazards.

  • To avoid any disputed insurance claims for fire damage due to poor electrical maintenance.

  • To meet the requirement of the ISO 9000 Quality Assurance Standard to comply with Health and Safety requirements.

  • To maintain the safety of your tenants, employees, visitors and clients.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THE TEST?

After each PAT Test a comprehensive Certifcate is produced detailing every item tested, its general condition and if it PASSED or FAILED testing.

Recommendations are also made to ensure your appliances/equipment last for years to come.
